Skepticism and Trust - Our Dangerous Lovers
The Skeptic and The Trusting One in Each of Us

The Skeptic:

Life with the Skeptic is safe.

Little ventured - little lost. The Skeptic is cacooned in a wrap of self protecting concern, and a world of potential hurt is locked out by evaluation, reevaluation, and critique.

A Skeptic lives in each of us. She rears her ghastly head and invokes shudders of fear. Like Medusa, she turns our experiences to stone, and leaves behind a trail of dead statues. She is the source of our loss of adventure. She is the reason we have not capitalized on potential investments. She is our apathy, and our indifference. Through her we have lost loves, missed opportunities, and stood still when we should have run. Because of her we are languishing in mediocrity. We mourn the days we listened to her advice and played it safe.

The Skeptic rises early, yet never catches the worm. The worm is not safe, you see.

Yet, we love the Skeptic. She surrounds our little, lonely world with careful consideration, and always remembers our best interests. Through her we have averted calamity and heartache. She has saved us uncounted thousands of dollars, and kept us free from relationships of bondage and abuse. We are proud of her keen common sense, and we live in the safety of decisions she has made.

She is our friend, and yet she is our foe. In one experience she has saved our lives, and in the next unbearably restricted our freedom. We live in uncomfortable struggle with the Skeptic. She is hated and she is cherished.

She is the wise one, but she is the self-serving one.

She is always present, but we can not live with her, and we can not live without her.

The Trusting One:

Little ventured - little gained.

The Trusting One sees potential around every corner. She is the optimist, and she is the risk taker. She is hopelessly hopeful, and the source of our deepest wounds.

Life with the Trusting One is dangerous.

The Trusting One peeks out beneath her batting eyes like Mata Hari, and seduces us with her promises of love, and adventure, of gain, and of security. Yet, she is a clumsy profiteer. Her sources leave us half-informed. Her information is unsubstantiated. Her news is old - already the chatter of gossip circles.

The Trusting One opens her door to every visitor. Thieves and friends enter alike.

Yet, we yearn for the Trusting One to have her way with us. Our heart beats with her passion for life. She is the source of found love. She is the reason for our successes. Her adventurous spirit has led us to the best life has to offer.

Life with the Trusting One is full of joy, and full of sorrow. Our greatest gains, and our deepest hurts are found in her impetuous ways. She leads us to ecstasy, and abandons us in impossible situations.

Life and death are in her hands. Yet her skills are poor, and she plays with death like dice on the table, and when they’ve rolled against us, she sneaks out leaving us in debt.

The Trusting One is a seductive, but childish lover. She is the adventurous one, but she is the naive one.

She is always present, but we can not live with her, and we can not live without her.
